Less than three months after work began, construction on Phase I of the Brady Tunnel renovation project is nearly complete.

IA Construction Corp. of Franklin paved a section of the bike/walking trail in Oil City’s West End on Wednesday. The paving was done in conjunction with moving the current recreation trail off a section of West First Street, from Darr to Osborne streets, and onto an unused railroad right-of-way. A trip on the Great Allegheny Passage is a tour through Pennsylvania history.
From its terminus in downtown Pittsburgh, the biking and walking trail follows rivers and railways through industrial hubs, tiny coal towns, and peaceful forests.
The GAP connects Pittsburgh with Cumberland, Md., spanning 148 miles. It was completed in 2013 after more than 35 years of work and attracts about 1 million bikers and hikers every year. Pittsburgh Trib Live September 21,2019
Work on the next leg of the Wynn and Clara Tredway Trail could begin by the end of April.
The goal is to have the project done by late August. The project is being funded using a $327,000 grant from the state’s Transportation Alternatives Program, which is managed by PennDOT. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has joined local riverfront communities to improve the parks and trails along the Allegheny River with the goal of closing gaps on the trail that prevent bikers and hikers from enjoying a full ride. Cindy Dunn, DCNR secretary, recently discussed this goal with local officials as they walked part of the trail between Sharpsburg and Aspinwall. Erie County Council voted to approved a resolution in support of efforts by the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail Alliance and other groups to complete a 270-mile multi-use trail system that links Erie to Pittsburgh. About 95 miles of trail needs to be completed. Erie is one of seven counties along the trail, the completion of which is a goal of the Northwest Pennsylvania Greenways Plan. Go Erie March 19, 2019
Each year, businesses get a chance to write a plan for the creation of a business to enhance the experience of those using the region’s hiking, biking, water and other recreational trails. It’s a concept the Oil Region Alliance puts forth in its annual Get on the Trail Entrepreneurial Business Plan Contest, ….. According to ORA President John Phillips, the trail system … has brought in $7 million worth of economic impact per year to the area. Organizers of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail to be opened in Blawnox next month have announced the name and a dedicated course. Dubbed the Allegheny Valley Trail, the section will primarily use Pine Street to make its way through Blawnox. What do an Easter Island head, a wise owl and a stack of inspirational toy blocks have in common? If you’re walking along the Redbank Valley Trail in the near future, you might just run into one or all of these things in the New Bethlehem and surrounding areas. As their efforts of the trail, beautification continues, the Redbank Valley Trails Association (RVTA) recently gave the green light for three larger than life steel welded sculptures — an Easter Island head, “Hoot” the owl and a stack of inspirational toy blocks — to be placed in various locations along the trail. Ed Talone, a cross-country hiker who estimated he has hiked about 60,000 miles during the past 30 years, the Silver Spring, Maryland resident left from Erie along the Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail at the beginning of June and arrived in Kittanning yesterday afternoon. The Erie to Pittsburgh Trail Alliance (eriepittsburghtrail.org) has made great progress in converting the dream of a trail connecting the Perry Monument in Erie to the Point in Pittsburgh into reality. Roughly two-thirds of this trail is completed. Local individual trail groups invented ways to convert the liabilities left from the Industrial Revolution into regional assets that are enjoyed by locals and are drawing out-of-state trail users. The Mercer County Trails Association (MCTA) has commenced the first phase of construction of the Shenango River Bicycle Trail. This trail was formerly New York Central’s trackbed. The rails-to-trails project will run from Greenville to Jamestown in Mercer County, following the Shenango River, then continue past Pymatuning State Park to Ohio. NW Passage November 2016

The Redbank Valley Trail, which was voted the 2014 Pennsylvania Trail of the Year, travels 41 scenic miles along Redbank Creek in southern Clarion County, leading to the Allegheny River in East Brady, Armstrong County. There, the RVT connects with the Armstrong Trail to Brookville, Jefferson County.
The Redbank Valley Trail serves as an important connector to the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail, providing an east-west route into the PA Wilds. The RVT also forms a part of the much larger north-south EPT network, which connects Erie to Pittsburgh, then onto Washington, D.C. via the Great Allegheny Passage. NW Passage September 2015.
The nonprofit Friends of the Riverfront has begun working with a consultant and Norfolk Southern Railroad to thread a 29-mile bike and pedestrian trail along the Allegheny River from Millvale to Schenley. About half of the 29-mile path through 17 communities passes through or near a live Norfolk Southern rail line, according to Tom Baxter, executive director of Friends of the Riverfront. The idea of a non-motorized, multipurpose trail connecting the Perry Monument on Presque Isle State Park in Erie to The Point in Pittsburgh first surfaced decades ago. Although the highway distance between the two cities is 128 miles, the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail when completed years from now, is projected to be 270 miles.

The Three Rivers Trail Survey said that annually about 800,000 people use the trail and have an economic impact of around $8.3 million — $6 million of that is from people buying goods and services right along the trail. Friends of the Riverfront is working to connect the trail throughout Allegheny County, and working to reach beyond Millvale as part of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail.

Another rails-to-trails route is being established. When completed, this hiking-biking trail will run from Pittsburgh to Erie, Pa. The route isn’t direct, however. It follows the Allegheny River northeast from Pittsburgh and then leaves the river at Oil City to wind up through Chautauqua County to Brockton, a few miles west of Dunkirk. From there it follows the Lake Erie shoreline west to Erie.

The nonprofit Friends of the Riverfront will discuss more details of its plan to develop a 29-mile recreational trail from Pittsburgh to Freeport along the Allegheny River tomorrow in Harmar. The proposed extension of the Three River Heritage trail will travel through 17 communities along the river. When completed, it would connect to the existing 22 miles of trails along the shoreline of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers on one end, and the Butler-Freeport Community Trail on the other.
