The mapping and other land use research involved in the creation of the Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail is made possible through the use of ArcView GIS, a software package from
Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
Local and statewide data used in these projects was provided by Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), county GIS departments and/or county Conservation Districts.
ESRIoffers a variety of programs to support groups and individuals working for social and
environmental benefit. They offer free or discounted software, hardware, data, training, and services for both online and desktop use. They also sponsor many community events for nonprofits including conferences, workshops, and classes. The ESRI Conservation Program is the non-profit support arm ESRI. Through their donations, they have helped to create and develop spatial analysis, computer mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) capability among thousands of non-profit organizations and individual projects of all sizes and types worldwide.
